Vinyasa yoga is a term that covers a broad range of yoga classes in which movement is synchronised to the breath. This style is sometimes also called flow yoga, because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance. The word 'vinyasa' can be translated as 'arranging something in a special way', in terms of how the yoga poses are sequenced. In vinyasa yoga classes, students coordinate movement with breath to flow from one pose to the next. Ashtanga, Baptiste Yoga, Jivamukti, Power Yoga, and Prana Flow could all be considered vinyasa yoga. The classes that I run generally involve some centering breath work at the beginning, a warm up, various combinations of sun salutations, standing poses, possibly balances and then seated postures and a slow down, ending with savasana- the most important pose of all, lying still and letting go.
